Ten Things I Bought and Love: a few of my favorite things
Buying things over the years…
All of us buy a variety of things over the years. My customer experience ranges from wild joy at what I have bought to complete disappointment. These items are the ones I love so much I feel like I have a relationship with them. They make my life better in a long term relationship, and I grow more and more fond of them every day. I hope you will share some of the things in your life you love.
1. Vitamix Blender
We bought our Vitamix a few years ago when I decided our family should try eating “raw” for a month. My previous blender lasted about 20 days and then was done. I really wanted a Vitamix. I had seen one in my 20’s and knew I wanted it. When the old blender broke, I looked at Mel and said, “What will I do?” and he said, “We better go buy you a Vitamix today.” Vitamixes are fairly expensive and he got some real points for understanding how important it was for me. We found one, bought it and I have been infatuated ever since with both Mel and the blender! Mel is fond of saying, “We are part of the Vitamix family.” It came with a video and that is how they talk about their customers. Hokey as it is, I really like being part of the Vitamix Family!
2. Kindle
I have a Paperwhite Kindle and although I am not absolutely sure it is the best possible e-reader, I love it so much. I love that it clears my house of the clutter from my voracious reading.
3. The Art Quilt that hangs on the wall and says “YES!”
My friend Catherine Schuler made it and I bought it as she was hanging her art show. I look at it from my desk and it reminds me how I want to live my life.
4. Cutco Knives
I got these when the boys were little. They were pricey but they have a lifetime warranty and free sharpening. This makes them a fabulous set for my kitchen. Sela couldn’t use these knives in a professional kitchen,
she needs to sharpen too frequently. For me they are just perfect!
5. La Roche Posay Hand Repair Cream
Until I bought this, I didn’t actually believe hand cream worked. I used this everyday and my
hands got better and stayed better.
6. The little salt dish we bought at Donn Zver’s Pottery Studio
I love the color, I love the shape and 1 year later I still feel happy every time I see it.
7. Our Prius V
We have 2 cars and we trade them between us every week. We both like the Prius so much and I wouldn’t want to never drive it and I wouldn’t want Mel to drive the other car every week. So we swap cars on Monday mornings.
8. My stainless steel compost bucket I keep by my sink.
I bought this at Lee Valley in 2008. I use it every day and I still love it. I actually have 2 but the lid to one is missing. I still use it as a back-up. Here’s another great choice – a clean air distributing compost bucket.
9. Sela’s Ukelele
When I picked it up and strummed it, I fell in love. We gave it to Sela for her birthday this year. I love hearing her play it and the joy it brings her.
10. Birkir and Bjork–Icelandic Snaps
We bought these on our trip this summer–twice. Once when we were leaving Iceland and once when we changed planes in Iceland on our way home. They are made of birch and are stunningly delicious. I wish I could get these at home.
We all spend money on things all the time. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes I am ready to put the new item out in the garbage after the first time I use it — it just doesn’t work as intended. I invite you to post things you love and why in the comments below!
