The 21 Day Hot Yoga Challenge Begins

Oct 28, 13 The 21 Day Hot Yoga Challenge Begins

Posted by in Featured, Fitness

I have decided to do some yoga.  A few years ago, I met the owner of  a local hot yoga studio called Moksha Yoga, in Dundas, Ontario–about 5 minutes from my house.  It stuck with me and I have been curious about it ever since.  Recently I stopped working with the trainer I loved, and found myself suddenly at loose ends for exercise.  I knew the studio offered a 21 day yoga pass for $30 and I decided to dive in and do it.  I am a sucker for incentives and prizes and they offer a free month if you do 21 classes in 21 days so I decide to commit to this wonderful and challenging journey.  I signed up. I’ll be writing about my journey and sharing it with you every day.  I hope you will share your stories in the comments section. If you are curious, I suggest you join in for your own 21 or 30 day challenge.  Many studios offer a 30 day challenge.  Feel free to make it part of your practice to post a comment or share each day.   Like what you are reading?  Sign up for a free membership (Tire Kicker’s Membership) to the Crucible Bookii and be notified about new posts.  Want to read all the content on the site? Our Gay Wedding

Sep 16, 13 Our Gay Wedding

Posted by in Featured, Mel & Me, Our Story

On August 30, 2013 we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary.  This is obviously a big deal for us.  We never had a honeymoon, so we went to Europe for a month this summer.  Also, we decided to take our kids.  We figure we have about 5 more years before they’re teenagers, and we didn’t want to leave them behind. I find that even though our 10th anniversary has passed, I am not quite done with it yet.  For whatever reason, this 10 year anniversary date had lots of meaning for me.  Maybe more than any other date.  I am not a person that remembers all the important dates.  I remember birthdays for my family and my anniversary.  I don’t  connect to death dates although I know other people do and try to be aware of those days.  My mother connects with those days and she is the family archivist.  I am reassured that she has all that information even though I don’t always want to know it. Anyway, I wanted to post a few pictures from our wedding and I wanted to tell you a little bit about it.  We got married right after same-sex marriage  became legal in 2003.  We had been in Canada about a year.  We knew we wanted to get married.  We had even talked about me establishing residency in Belgium by living there for 6 months so we could marry there.  Marriage was an extremely important value for us and if there was a way to marry, we were going to do it. My brother visited in June, right after it was legal in Ontario, and we would have done a small intimate wedding while he was here, but since I had a foreign divorce (we were shocked to find that the USA divorce needed a written legal opinion from a Canadian lawyer), we had to submit the necessary paper work and wait.  That led to planning a wedding later in the summer and then we figured we might...

Three Days in Iceland

Aug 31, 13 Three Days in Iceland

Posted by in Featured, Travel

We had an opportunity to add a stop in Iceland on our way to Paris.  Travel tip:  If you book on Iceland Air, you can make a stop in Iceland at no additional charge. Iceland can be both wildly expensive or strangely inexpensive depending on how you travel. Almost all of the amazing geological sites are free.  Because the country is an island, most of the consumer goods are imports, so if you stay away from shopping you can avoid high costs. Renting a car was interesting given that much of the country is impassable in a passenger car.  We kept worrying that we were going to drive into a forbidden area but it never happened.  We did see some giant SUVs that take people into the interior of the island.  Next time, I want to go in there! We found an amazing Bed and Breakfast called Minna-Mosfell.  They are near the Golden Circle and about 45 minutes from Kevflavik airport.  The  hosts Gudrun and Valur are warm and inviting. Their reviews on Trip Advisor are the best I have ever seen. They have a place with 3 rooms with a shared bath. Their set up is a lovely shared space with a sitting area and a table as well as a small self-catering kitchen. They have fresh home-made bread each morning as well as homegrown eggs, cheese, and tasty treats. We were able to make some sandwiches to take out on our day-trips which made our visit in Iceland so amazingly kid friendly.  They provided a picnic backpack and a thermos for each room.  This allowed for considerable savings and we ended up eating out for one simple meal each day.  Their hospitality was unbelievable. The landscape in Iceland is fantastic.  It looks like a moonscape when you fly into to town with all the lava.  There are very few trees and when we were there in the summer, it was green everywhere with purple Lupines blooming all over the place.  Driving around Iceland...

An open letter to my husband after 10 years of marriage…

Aug 30, 13 An open letter to my husband after 10 years of marriage…

Posted by in Featured, Mel & Me

To my husband, You are the love of my life.  You make my life richer, fuller, more interesting and so full of love.  When we decided to join our lives together I had dreams of flowers and romance and making each other happy.  And there have been days like that. But the reality of our marriage has been so much more complex.  We challenge each other and take on big challenges and lifetime commitments together.  We make life changing decisions together.  Marriage involves an intimacy that takes my breath away when I allow myself to think about it.  You have seen me at my worst and you love me anyway.  You have been so incredibly mad at me and still you love me so much.  The intimacy of that love year after year is astounding.  At every juncture there is a choice to keep committing to our love or to get annoyed, give up and stop.  Every time, you choose love. I know you love me because of how you care for our lives.  The evidence of the love you have for our family is all around us.  It is clear in the way you care for our children and make time for them.  It is in the grass you cut, in the swimming pool you maintain, it is in the white picket fence that lines our 2-acre property that you repair and replace pickets for each year.  A couple of years ago someone recommended we replace that fence with something that would require less maintenance.  I couldn’t imagine trading it in–it is a symbol for me of the love in our lives.  Your love shows when you give me the car with the gas tank full and make sure the oil gets changed.  We haven’t chosen an easy life, but one full of love and care.  You show me that love every day. When we got married, I thought marriage was about love and kisses but what I know now is that being...

It’s Weird Being an Immigrant to Canada

Jul 01, 13 It’s Weird Being an Immigrant to Canada

Posted by in Family, Featured

When we first moved to Canada in 2002, we were immigrants.  We didn’t have family to show us around so we stumbled our way around the culture, trying our best and sometimes failing both miserably and comically. Fitting into the local school system was challenging for us since we looked like we spoke the language and we seemed to fit in.  Our immigrant-ness was invisible so it led to some funny challenges.  Like the day Sela came home and said, “Quiz me on the provinces and their capitals!”  I have to admit it had never actually occurred to me that provinces had capitals although when I thought about it, it made sense. “Do you…er…have a list?”  I asked.  We figured it out and we all learned the capitals together. All Canadian elementary students have an agenda from the school that is used for back and forth communication with the teacher.  We got a note one day in the agenda that Sela needed duotangs.  We were puzzled.  I knew that duotangs had been on Sela’s school shopping list at the beginning of the school year but since I had no idea what they were, I had ignored them  (one of my immigrant strategies is to wait to see if things get clearer with time). I figured, maybe the teacher could help us with the duotangs, so I told Sela to ask the teacher where we could get them. “Shoppers” was the answer. We actually were lucky enough to know this did not refer to personal shoppers like they have at Nordstrom or any other kind of actual shopper, “Shoppers” refers to Shoppers Drug Mart which is the Walgreens of Canada and a near monopoly.  They are a little different from Walgreens and most of them have cosmetics and a small grocery section.  And apparently, school supplies. We went off to “Shoppers” and looked around everywhere to see if we could find a sign that said duotang.  We are fairly smart, we started in the school supplies...
