People ask me what the Crucible is. In 2000 I was recently divorced and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I changed careers and became a business coach. And I met Mel who eventually became my husband. At the time I met Me, I was straight and Mel is a transgender man (a female to male transsexual). He had not yet transitioned. I was terrified and I didn’t think I was brave enough to step out of my comfort zone to be with Mel even though I very much wanted to. I sent Mel away because I was afraid. I couldn’t face coming out to my family and friends and changing my identity in the world. I was scared of change. There was a day that I looked at myself in the mirror and I realized I didn’t want to be the person that wasn’t brave enough to live my life the way I wanted to. I didn’t want to live in fear. I didn’t think I could look at myself in the mirror anymore if I didn’t try to make things work with Mel. When I decided to be in relationship with Mel, I put myself and my life into the fire that I came to picture as a Crucible. I put myself into the fire. This is my real-time memoir of my life in the Crucible…because falling in love changed everything.
